What does Biodynamic® mean anyway?

For starters, Biodynamic is simply a farming method that “heals” the soil. At Narrow Gate, farmer Frank is dedicated to this “beyond organic” farming method introduced by Rudolph Steiner in the early 1900’s. The entire 86-acre farm, which includes 13 acres of wine grapes, is certified biodynamic by the Demeter Association. The farm itself produces its own fertility via the composting of grape skins, seeds, stems, cow and chicken manure, along with specific biodynamic preparations that include ground quartz rock, plant life, barrel lees and cow horns. Some of these preparations and teas are applied to the vineyard soil to exponentially increase microbial activity and soil vitality within the soil structure. Others are applied to the vine canopy as a natural anti-fungal or pest suppression remedy. We like to highlight that there is zero use of chemical herbicides or pesticides on the farm and Frank employs minimal intervention winemaking.

Our Story:

Founded in 2004, by husband and wife team Frank and Teena Hildebrand, Narrow Gate Vineyards is a testimony to faith, perseverance and reinvention. In 2000 they traded fashion industry careers for a new beginning in El Dorado wine country and have never looked back. After planting the vineyard in 2001, they built and opened a European-style, intimate winery/cellar and tasting room, set amidst majestic Ponderosa pines at 2500 feet altitude. In 2010 the vineyard and farm were certified biodynamic and twenty years since first opening their passion to introduce you to wines you can trust continues.
